Forget what you know about ACL injuries.

This week, Power Athlete Radio is bringing you one the best and most informative episodes to date.  The crew welcomes Dr. Tim Hewett of Ohio State University and the Mayo Clinic.  Dr. Tim is a captivating voice for ongoing epidemiological studies being done to predict and prevent ACL injuries.

Tim walks us through his twenty year history in the study of the anterior cruciate ligament.  He explains how the rumors are true – ACL injuries are six times more likely to occur in females than males but the scientific reasons for this may surprise you.  Here’s a hint: it has little to do with the Q-angle or hip to knee ratio.

After our discussion of risk factors and the most commonly affected demographic, Dr. Tim elaborates on the best forms of injury prevention.  Training in various planes of motion is just one of the suggested means to confront this potentially debilitating injury.  You’ll hear from our talk that Dr. Tim Hewett lives and dies by the “posture and position” mantra.

How do you get your sport coaches and athletes on board with the training it takes to keep teams safe?  We ask the Dr. Hewett that very question and he responds with an NBA story that would make any coach shake their head in disgust and any athlete’s knees ache, for that matter.

What a pleasure it was to dive down the strength and conditioning rabbit hole with such an accomplished researcher.  For every meandering question, Dr. Hewett managed to provide a concise and comprehensive answer.  Something we’re not used to here at PAHQ.

Pretty nice that someone not affiliated with PA independently affirms, without prodding, basically everything PAHQ teaches.

100%. It was crazy to hear him speak because it was as if we coached him to say those things. We didn’t put him on the show thinking that he was going to confirm/deny our philosophies, but in the end, he did. All around smart guy.
