Not Your Grandma’s Weight Room

Liza Reader of University of Louisville has seen the changes in collegiate athletes over the years. While she relents that internet has spawned a thirsty demographic of attention seeking “fitness experts”, she says that she’s seeing at least one positive change in the athletes entering her program. These young go-hards want to know the “WHY” of training. Information about exercise physiology, both legitimate and bullshit, is readily available to the tech savvy generation but it’s a gift and a curse to coaches these days. Now enthusiastic players are lost in the bro-science, pseudoscience, and actual science spectrum. Who will lead them back to true North? This is the coaching cross to bear for folks like Reader and to her credit, she embraces the opportunity to showcase her knowledge and experience. At Power Athlete HQ, this is what we refer to as The Coach’s Responsibility.

Time’s are a-changing and this is not your grandma’s weight room. As our understanding of exercise physiology seems to finally create a clear picture of athletic performance, our grasp on the modern athlete psyche seems to stay just beyond reach. That’s because with unbridled access to the internet and social media, athletes…even smart ones, are bombarded with the noise. While The Crew learns how to navigate these trashcan influencers from Reader, they also manage to derail with an impromptu spelling bee, Days of Thunder references, and swearing off swearing. Yeah, ok.

Empower Your Performance

You won’t find Liza Reader on social media, god bless her, but you can find more information about her program at Louisville.edu. Remember she’ll be speaking at the Kentucky Coach’s Conference…TBD.
