Emotional Intelligence for Athletes
With access to some of the greatest minds in academia, Director of Student Athlete Innovation & Performance Tom Newman [@bulldog.strength] has been successful in creating a winning culture at Yale. Tom brings his knowledge of training and sports science to the table but has learned that the key is to “stay humble, stay hungry”. With this mindset, he’s exposed himself, and subsequently his athletes, to a world of research and human behavioral studies that he feels is the future of athletic performance. There’s no doubt that the incorporation of concepts like emotional intelligence into his program has given his college athletes an edge and awareness that is generally overlooked by traditional athletics programs. This, Tom says, is just the beginning.
Visit the weight room at Yale University and you won’t find Coach Tom Newman [@bulldog.strength] screaming at his athletes or hyping his teams up. Newman says the environment of focus, precision, and accountability is something that can only be appreciated in person. This is not a lucky happenstance because he’s working with some of the smartest young minds in our country, it’s by design. Luke and Tex present some of the common issues seen at the collegiate level and Tom provides pointed solutions with ease. His organization of the student athletes into a system of accountability has proven effective. He also tackles the delicate sport coach/strength coach balance. It’s obvious Newman’s love for performance has caused him to seek the mental edge in some unconventional places. Listen NOW!

A strength and conditioning coach since 2009, Cali has worked with numerous athletes spanning from rugby players to cross country skiers. Almost immediately after finding CrossFit in 2010, she was introduced to a program that better suited her athletic goals. With her existing background in powerlifting and football, she became a natural devotee to CFFB/PowerAthlete and testament to it's effectiveness. In 2012, she left D.C. and headed for the state named after her to be a part of the CrossFit Football Seminar Staff and a Jedi of Power Athlete HQ. Cali currently resides in Seattle where she works full time in law enforcement.
