Hardships and Heroes

Some things are rarely discussed by high level coaches like Ryan Davis [@CoachRyanDavis] of University of Maryland, one of those being vulnerability. As Director of Football Strength and Conditioning, Davis seeks to build a foundation with his players like no other organization. It’s his belief that being your most authentic self is the best way to connect with your athletes, that includes letting your guard down from time to time. It also means making a definitive distinction between punishment and discipline, understanding that to develop a winning program every coaching action must have specific intent.

Choices lead to habits which lead to behaviors. Coach Ryan Davis [@CoachRyanDavis] of the University of Maryland believes in this mantra for not only his athletes but his coaching staff as well. For athletes it may mean organizing their priorities in a way that reflects their dedication to sport success. For the coaches, it may mean making the choice and conscious effort to get to know each athlete on an individual level. Davis believes in the power of connection and it often starts with knowing your athletes’ most difficult hardships. This open dialogue between coaches, students, and among players themselves, is needed now more than ever as differences like  race play such a large role in our life experiences. Learn how to bridge the gap with Coach Davis.
