In this episode the Crew dials the voicemail to answer a question from a loyal Power Athlete Radio listener:
Hey there. This is Colin, first-time listener, long-time caller. I’m enjoying the Friday movie rec. It’s bringing me back to the early lockdown part of the old pandemic really getting into some nice Friday movie talk. Now my question is this: how did you guys come up with this quote, un-quote “sports movie checklist?”
I’ve got some exceptions to this rule. For example, there’s no way Charlie Sheen is touching 99 mph with that form. And putting it out there, Point Break is a surfing movie with a bank robbery problem. Not to mention one of the greatest movies and probably one of the best underground sports, the sport of storm chasing, the movie being the documentary: Twister. How is that is no on here? You’ve got top-tier athletes, Bill Paxton to name one. So, you know, can we get a walk-through of the sports movie checklist? And, how do we go about fixing this and adding storm chasing to the sports? Enjoying what you guys are putting out there, keep it coming.
Changing Sports Movies For-ev-er
There are sports movies, and then there are Sports movies (with a capital ‘S’). Luke and Tex sit down for an important Sports movie debate: Is Finding Forrester (2000) a Sports movie? To settle this debate they must dig deeper than Denzel, climb higher than Sly, and reach for the stars like Rudy.
The Crew presents a five point sports movie checklist finding parallels and anchors from sport cinema classics and testing Forrester, a classic mentee mentors the mentor tale starring Sir Sean Connery and DIII All-Star Rob Brown and directed by the same guy as Good Will Hunting. Will the findings show Forrester checks all the boxes for winning Sports movie classification?! If you ain’t first to listen, you’re last!
If you enjoy sports movie banter, then checkout the full breakdown of the sports movie checklist. See which famous scenes helped mold the list and solidify their films as sports classics and exclude Twister as sports movie (But not from our Top 5 of all-time).
