The real history, mythology and evolution of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Jiu-jitsu has never been short on legends. The problem is, repeat a good story long enough and people stop asking whether it’s actually true. This week, I sit down with ADCC World Champion, coach and author Robert Drysdale to pull apart the mythology surrounding Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and trace how the art became what we know today.
We dig into the real history of the Gracie family, the split between judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and how rule changes, competition and live training shaped the modern ground game. Drysdale also challenges the rise of no-gi, the commercialization of BJJ and the growing tension between jiu-jitsu as an education and jiu-jitsu as entertainment.
This isn’t another conversation about submissions and medals. It’s about what happens when history becomes marketing, sport becomes business, and the stories we tell start shaping the thing itself. If you train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, coach it, or give a s**t about where martial arts are headed, this one goes well beyond the mat.
