Even-Esh, Steel, & Welbourn

To be a fly on the wall with two of the biggest names in the strength and conditioning game…This week Power Athlete Radio brings you exactly that: an impromptu conversation between John Welbourn [@JohnWelbourn], Zach Even-Esh [@zevenesh] and Jim Steel. Set in Philly, this trip was not a Rocky homage or your classic Welbourn cheesesteak hazing. Tex and John were all business all weekend as they put on a Sports Specific Application Seminar and met with Zach and Jim to tour the UPenn training facility.

When the guys sat down to shoot the shit, an opportunity to capture even a fraction of the knowledge was seized. However, it’s disorganized as fuck. That’s while I’ll be introducing the segments as we go in an attempt to live to self proclaimed title : The World’s Premier Podcast in Strength and Condition.

Food and Philly – what better way to open the discussion with three very large coaches and one hungry hobbit, sorry Tex. Then we learn that John is still recognized, not for his NFL career, but for being in Every Second Counts. Did you know Zach and John have more in common than just their zodiac sign? So many degrees of Bill Belichick, coming up!

Next up, John responds to Jim Steel’s questions about the best opponent he’s ever come up against.  Things get a little weird when Welbourn spills a secret about how he went full serial killer tearing out the picture of his opponent from a game program and pasting it to his bathroom mirror.

In this segment, Zach wants to know from Jim’s perspective, what makes a great youth athlete? What is that X factor that is so difficult to define, but determines an athletes success and longevity in sport. Translating that into success as an adult, never accepting complacency should be the goal of every coach.

Coming up, Zach presents an excellent training question about the evolution of your average entry level athlete and kids asking about deloading. HWHAT?! Oh and NFL stories for dayzz. I think the takeaway is hit hard and tea bag harder? I’ll let you figure it out…

In this last segment, Jim Steel discusses adding muay thai to his lacrosse programs to train transverse and rotational movements. Impressive and unique GPP coming out this 20 year coach is not surprising in the least.

Also, an excellent synopsis of the lessons learned during this recording can be found on Zach’s website. An article titled “12 Things I Learned on a Never Ending Podcast with John Welbourn and Jim Steel“.

This year’s Power Athlete Symposium is now open to the public for the first time! If you haven’t heard of this annual knowledgefest, it’s basically the most badass three days spent in SoCal. Rub elbows with fellow Power Athletes and soak up the wisdom from guest speakers like Robb Wolfe, Andy Stumpf, Aaron Ausmus, and Brad Snyder. Of course you can expect that the PA Crew will also be leading the weekend with the latest and greatest out of HQ.  Registration can be found at https://powerathletehq.com/symposium and closes on November 23rd. Hope to see you there!
