Ladies and gentleman we bring to you a LIVE*ish* podcast (uncut and on site, but not actually live) from this last weekend’s CrossFit Football Trainer’s Seminar at CrossFit of Naperville.  For those who haven’t yet attended, the seminar is a two day event where PAHQ staff cover the programming found on CrossFitFootball.com, as well as take a deep dive into the Power Athlete method.  Attendees walk away with a set of tools to develop good movement and athleticism in athletes of all skill levels.  Sit back and relax as you hear from the a few of the attendees after day 1.  Please pardon the background noise as we recorded during “cocktail hour.”

John

John Welbourn is CEO of Power Athlete and Fuse Move. He is also creator of the online training phenomena, Johnnie WOD. He is a 9 year veteran of the NFL. John was drafted with the 97th pick in 1999 NFL Draft and went on to be a starter for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999-2003, appearing in 3 NFC Championship games, and for starter for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2004-2007. In 2008, he played with the New England Patriots until an injury ended his season early with him retiring in 2009. Over the course of his career, John has started over 100 games and has 10 play-off appearances. He was a four year lettermen while playing football at the University of California at Berkeley. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in Rhetoric in 1998. John has worked with the MLB, NFL, NHL, Olympic athletes and Military.     Denny sure does like to talk a lot about good looking men… I’m not saying, I’m just saying.

    For the record- I never said Booty was better looking. You are both beautiful, unique, snowflakes. Understand that I work with Ben and Luke everyday so my standards are low. Reeeaaal low.

    We didn’t get to the Floor Press at the NorCal one, either. Maybe just delete it? I would love to have a slot for vertical jump, though.

    Also, #1 rule for attending a Cert: wear a name tag. Otherwise, they’ll call you by whatever your t-shirt says. All weekend, I was Spam.

    Ingo- Weren’t you rocking a NKOTB shirt? I’m being 100% serious.

    I still call people by their shirt even if I know their name. My parents included. #EstablishingDominance

    The floor press is too important to delete. Really what we’re trying to do is mimic BP with a large group. This movement pattern allows us to see if people can maintain proper scap retraction under load without committing the cardinal sin of pushing through the shoulder girdle. You’d be surprised at how many idiots are still doing this regularly and wonder why they have chronic shoulder pain. The fact is, the horizontal press is a Power Athlete movement and when trained properly, or improperly for that matter, can have big effects on an athletes performance. Also, bench press is awesome.

    In my defense, Amos (of Crossfit Balboa – Remote fame) dared me to wear it. I’d say that makes the act manly.

    You guys need a 3rd day to these things. I kinda wish we went over the press now.

    I think I have self-esteem issues. I can remember growing up with posters of Arnold, Lou, and Zane on my walls…oiled up men in speedos….my friends had posters of women in bikinis/cars hanging on their walls….

    The Floor Press work was cool. I’m glad that there is time committed to teaching the mechanics of it during the seminar.
