| | What Were You Training For?

There is a common vernacular that many of us in the Power Athlete nation speak; “Empower your Performance”, “Unlock Athletic Potential”, and “documentary series” are a few examples of common phrases thrown around in our everyday conversation. But another that has become common lexicon is the often asked, almost cliche question, “What are you training for?”. The problem is, more often than not, it’s the only question that’s asked. While it’s a great starting point, if it isn’t followed with a string of follow on inquiries, then you just wasted your breath.

It’s now February; the “year” of January is over, and we’re now in to month number two. If you made a New Year’s resolution, the statistics say that there’s a high likelihood (like 80% high) that you have either fallen off, or will fall off, by the second week of February. Of those few that are left, you might be wondering what’s next now that you have survived your first bout.  For both groups, I have another question for you:

What were you training for?

Did you want to train to get better at a field or court sport? Then those muscle-ups and high-rep thrusters and light weights were a waste of time.

Did you want to lose weight and look better naked? Sorry, those “green” smoothies had the opposite effect, so you’d best throw those out now.

Did you want to run your first marathon or compete in your first triathlon? If you’re training didn’t also include a heavy barbell, you missed out on a huge piece of the puzzle.

The good news is, don’t fret; consider this your February check in. Now is your chance to dust yourself off and get back on the wagon. Reassess what you were training for, figure out if it’s still your goal, and get yourself a coach to help you along. After all, if you were one of the folks who already lost your way, you’ve got 11 more months ahead of you, and it’s not going to get any easier by waiting. And, if you were one of the people who managed to stick with your resolution, finding a coach who understands your training goals, and more importantly can expand on the foundation you’ve already built to lay out the path forward, will help carry you to the next level… and Empower your Performance.

This article is extremely relevant to all cases, except if one were trying to usurp the existing Director Of Puns. If that is you, you’re better off drinking the green smoothie.

If you’re goal was to retain that title, I’d stick to your circle pull ups. More likely to get results out of that.
