A must-read for athletes looking to boost power and longevity from the ground up
I had a powerful conversation with Dr. Peter Martone on Power Athlete Radio—one that cut right to the root of athletic dysfunction: weak feet.
Martone dropped a truth bomb early on: 99.9% of our contact with the Earth happens through our feet. That one stat reframes everything. Your feet aren’t just along for the ride—they’re the ignition switch for human movement. If they’re weak, the rest of your system compensates, and performance suffers.

The Forgotten Engine of Human Movement
Foot strength doesn’t just influence performance—it dictates it. Every ounce of force you generate starts from the ground. If your feet can’t stabilize and transmit force efficiently, your kinetic chain collapses under pressure. Sprint slower. Change direction awkwardly. Recover poorly. Sound familiar?
Martone highlights the ripple effect: dysfunctional feet lead to compromised knees, hips, and backs. Think about that next time you’re foam rolling your IT band. You might be treating a symptom, not the source.
Why Feet Are Getting Weaker—and What It’s Costing You
Modern life is the perfect recipe for muscular atrophy—especially in your feet. We’re sitting more, moving less, and stuffing our feet into over-cushioned coffins we call shoes. Martone compares this to putting a limb in a cast. Immobilization breeds weakness.
Your shoes may be stylish or “supportive,” but they’re robbing your feet of the natural inputs they need to stay functional. Over time, that means less stability, less strength, and a greater chance of injury. For an athlete, that’s unacceptable.
Strong Feet, Strong Athlete
Dr. Martone and I agree—building stronger feet unlocks better performance. Football players, grapplers, sprinters… anyone who needs to generate or redirect force quickly needs foot integrity. Strong feet help you accelerate faster, react quicker, and absorb impact more efficiently.
And it doesn’t take fancy gear or hours of training. Toe curls. Arch lifts. Time spent barefoot. Simple inputs create profound changes when applied consistently.
Movement Starts with Muscle—and Mindset
There’s a mindset shift required here. We’ve been conditioned to focus on muscles we can flex in the mirror. But the real work starts with the stuff we don’t see. Feet, ankles, hips. Functional strength over flash.
The athlete who invests in foundational strength today avoids the orthopedic bills tomorrow.
Reclaiming the Ground
Our feet have 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. That’s not an accident. Nature designed your feet to move, respond, and adapt. Ignore them, and you’ll pay the price.
Recognize how the modern world is stripping you of that capability—and fight back. Kick off your shoes. Walk barefoot. Strengthen your arches. Reconnect with the ground and reclaim your movement. And if you’re ready to take your foot health to the next level, check out our Foot Health Course.
