ELECTRIFYING. It’s the one and only word I have for Power Athlete Nation that can describe Round 2 of the 2016 Superhero Smackdown! The 8 competitors that advanced from Round 1 threw down to continue their quest to be crowned as Power Athlete Nation’s Fittest Superhero. To view Round 1 results, Click Here.
Round 2 consisted of the following workouts:
SUPERHERO SMACKDOWN – EVENT 3 – MURPH
For time, with 20 / 14-lb. of body armor:
1-mile run
100 pull-ups
200 push-ups
300 squats
1-mile run
Each athlete will wear weighted body armor for the duration of the event. There will be a 55 minute time cap.
SUPERHERO SMACKDOWN – EVENT 4 – SNATCH SPEED LADDER
Unlike the 2015 CrossFit Games event, we will NOT be breaking this event down into 3 rounds. Athletes will work their way through this ladder for time, and then be awarded points based off of how fast they complete the speed ladder.
For time:
1 squat snatch at each ascending weight for time:
190, 200, 205, 210, 215, 220, 230, 235, 240, 245, 250, 260, 265, 270, 275 lbs
SUPERHERO SMACKDOWN – EVENT 5 – HEAVY DT
Heavy DT
5 rounds for time of:
12 deadlifts
9 hang power cleans
6 push jerks
The weight will be 205 lbs. Athletes will complete 5 rounds of the barbell complex, advancing forward after each round.
SUPERHERO SMACKDOWN – ROUND 2 RESULTS
Oh how the mighty can fall. Hancock, the Smackdown’s only physically invulnerable athlete, no shows for Round 2 of the Smackdown! Some of you called it early on; the event staff found Hancock passed out on the bench outside of the competition with empty bottles of Pap Smear Vodka strewn about. While they attempted to wake him, he didn’t budge. With or without Hancock, the show must go on.
Another big fall from the top was Django Freeman, who put up absolutely stellar numbers in Round 1. Django found himself securing last place in Round 2. My only advice for Django: FIRE YOUR COACH! Django suffered various no reps from head judge Liam Neeson in Events 4 and 5 of Round 2. Django’s Oly lifting and overhead ability is about as good as plain boiled chicken tastes. He put on a terrifyingly disappointing performance in both the Snatch Speed Ladder and Heavy DT. Unfortunately, Django will not be advancing to Round 3.
Rounding out the final two competitors that will NOT be advancing to Round 3 were the two featured athletes in Round 2 of our Superhero SHOWDOWN: Team Field Strong’s Bane and Grindstone’s Tommy Conlon.
Simply put, Murph was the deciding factor for these two warriors. I pegged them as potential front runners in this event, and I know I’m not the only one. As Murph unfolded in the Superhero Smackdown Conlon and Bane reaffirmed our suspicions, they were dominant… up until the last mile run. The two were easily 2+ minutes ahead of the next fastest competitor going into the final run and were stride for stride until the half mile turn around.
It was at this point that words were exchanged, and a brawl broke out. The exact cause of the fight is unknown, although the rumor mill is turning. Conlon’s technical abilities were met equally with Bane’s tenacity. The two duked it out for about 6 minutes until Conlon managed to edge out the win in Murph as he unmounted from a ground and pound on Bane. As Bane stood up expecting Conlon to come try and finish the fight, the cage fighter had already turned for the finish line giving him just enough of a head start to take the event.
During the melee, the rest of the competitors overtook Bane and Conlon resulting in a disastrous overall finish on the day for the two of them.
Conlon, being a better technician than Bane in the Olympic lifts, was able to squeak out a victory in the Snatch Speed Ladder. The same couldn’t be said for Heavy DT. Bane put on an absolute CLINIC! Heavy DT was no match for Bane’s power and strength. “It was just like picking up and throwing around the bodies of those who oppose me,” said Bane after the event.
While both are not be advancing to Round 3, at least Bane can walk away with his head up as this round’s victor of the Superhero SHOWDOWN.
Let’s talk another big story! One man, 6 syllables:
DOM-I-NIC TOR-ET-TO.
This is the top story of Round 2’s winner circle! He and Smackdown foe Luke Hobbs gave the crowd a neck and neck finish Murph, with Hobbs giving Toretto a taste of his own medicine! Toretto had a strong lead the entire event, even into the final mile run. But Hobbs, trailing closely behind, hit the NOS perfectly in the last 400m stretch of the 1 mile run. He flew by Toretto and took 1st place.
Toretto, not a man to known to be held down by any adversity, absolutely BLINDSIDES the entire crowd with his amazing snatch technique in Event 4, the Snatch Speed Ladder. One of life’s classic sayings, don’t judge a book by it’s cover, holds true! Because this grease monkey can lift some weights! Not only did he smash the Snatch Speed Ladder, he also crushed Heavy DT, obliterating Hobbs’ time by almost a minute and a half!
Also advancing to Round 3 are the Smackdown’s two most famous soldiers, John Rambo and Alan “Dutch” Shaeffer. These boys hung in there to not only secure their spot in Round 3, but will also be featured in the final round of the Superhero SHOWDOWN!
You can see the results for each event below. Remember, only the top 4 will be advancing to Round 3, and NO POINTS carried over from Round 1.
As we enter Round 3 of the Superhero Smackdown both Team Grindstone and Team Field Strong are tied with the number of competitors advancing.
NEXT ROUND’S SUPERHERO SHOWDOWN – DUTCH VS. RAMBO

SUPERHERO SMACKDOWN – EVENT 7 – SPRINT COURSE 1 & 2
For time:
Sprint north through obstacle course (Sprint Course 1)
Rest
Sprint south through obstacle course (Sprint Course 2)
In this event, athletes will sprint across the soccer stadium through a series of obstacles (Sprint Course 1), rest briefly, reset, and then sprint back the opposite direction through the course (Sprint Course 2). The athlete’s scores will be their times for each sprint, scored as separate events. Athletes will receive a 2-second penalty if they knock over a hurdle.
SUPERHERO SMACKDOWN – EVENT 8 – SOCCER CHIPPER
For time:
100-ft. 560lbs Pig flip
4 legless rope climbs
100-ft. handstand walk
Athletes will begin by flipping the Pig halfway across the field to the rig, where they will then perform 4 legless rope climbs. They will then proceed to the handstand walk, which will be divided into 50-ft. sections. Each section must be completed unbroken, without the athlete coming back down to their feet. If the athlete comes down from their hands they must return to the start of that section. The event is complete when the athlete finishes the last section of handstand walking.
SUPERHERO SMACKDOWN – EVENT 9 – CLEAN AND JERK
1-rep-max clean and jerk
Athletes will have two 20-second windows to perform a max clean and jerk, rotating through with only one athlete lifting at a time.
SUPERHERO SMACKDOWN – EVENT 10 – TRIANGLE COUPLET
15-10-6 reps for time of:
Thrusters 165lbs
Bar muscle-ups
Athletes will complete 15 thrusters, then 15 bar muscle-ups, 10 thrusters and 10 bar muscle-ups, then 6 thrusters and 6 bar muscle-ups.
