People love to hate the strong and successful.

The highly anticipated interview with the self proclaimed “World’s Most Muscular DJ” is here.  Our fascination with this hyper-confident caricature of masculinity began some time ago and now finally, we come face to face – or ear to ear, rather – with Gillz Einarsson; The brains and more importantly, the body, behind DJ Muscleboy.

Despite the superficial exterior, Gillz is a complicated man with serious love for strength training.  Through our conversation, we find that the passion for lifting preceded his introduction to the limelight.  But Gillz’s public persona did not go without scrutiny.  As his popularity gained momentum and success, so did the hater outrage.  How did DJ Muscleboy combat the misguided opinions?  Simple.  He didn’t.  He embraced the notoriety, albeit negative, and capitalized on the imposed stereotypes.

Gillz tells about some of the major influences in his life, one in particular who is an Iceland favorite, Jean Pall Sigmarsson, who famously said: “There is no reason to be alive if you can’t deadlift” and later died at 32 while doing what he loved.  Yes, deadlifting.

Although Gillz is widely known as DJ Muscleboy and one of the pioneers of metro-sexuality, his interest and focus has always been training.  As an educated fitness professional, he maintains that diet is the single most limiting factor for the majority of his clients.  This hurdle is one that he imposes straight from the start with any athlete – and as he assures us, no matter how much they might struggle he “never gives up”.

You heard it here first folks.  If you need something to train for, perhaps accepting DJ Muscleboy’s challenge of competing for the title “World’s Most Muscular DJ” is just the motivation you need.  I’d personally like to see a DJ MuscleMAN come out of the woodwork, but that’s just me.

Don’t forget to look for Gillz Einarsson on Facebook under his stage name or on InstaGram under @EgillGillz.

Join us next week when we talk to Travis Pollen about training the Adaptive Athlete.  You can find my interview with him on PAHQ.com under Training Adaptive Athletes Part 1 & Part 2 to get a head start on what it’s like to be, to coach, and to compete in this unique and amazing population.

This was an awesome episode. John and DJ Muscleboy going back and forth on the horror that is skinny weak men with “12’s”, people were giving me looks while I laughed out loud at the grocery store. @John, “I guess I need to get a pink polo shirt and stop eating.” Awesome, thanks for the laughs! Here’s the link for the Dorian Yates video you were talking about:
