Power Athlete Radio – Episode 93 Jim Wendler

"i can't relate to people who wouldn't die for what they do."

This week are joined by coach, lifter, musician, and legend, Jim Wendler.  Jim was nice enough to indulge us for a lengthy conversation about his training ethos and it's origins.

We discuss the culture of sports and how unique the team dynamic really is.  Jim appropriately makes note of (and I'm paraphrasing here)  rhow the people outside the culture try dictate how the culture should behave.

After some football reminiscing, we have to explain to Jim how an "up down" is really called a "burpee" now and that people voluntarily do them for conditioning.  His response is of course, priceless.

If you're like me, you're probably wondering what Jim thinks about the popularity of the now widely used "5-3-1" method.  Find out what he really thinks about the implementation and how he navigates questions like "Can you 5-3-1 wallballs?"

Finally, hear what's new with Jim and what is on his agenda for 2015.

Get your pencil and paper ready to jot down some of the most quotable Wendlerisms including this one:

"Most of your problems could be solved if you just took a shit and thought about it for ten seconds."

Yep.  More of that to come on Power Athlete Radio.

  1. Here is the badass article, ‘The Walk On’ discussed during the episode: http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/most_recent/the_walk_on&cr=

  2. Kevin

I Had The Westside Conjugate Method On VHS. (dating myself) One Of My Favorite (Actual) Experts Ever. Great Interview. Would Love To Hear Another Episode With him.

  3. looking back on the last 8years of training and coaching, I can honestly say that starting off as a disciple of Uncle Jim was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. Constantly learning and growing as a coach is important, but nothing will replace those early years in terms of molding your training ideologies and principles. 5/3/1 should be required reading for every American male on their 18th birthday.

    GREAT Podcast!!!

  4. Best line- “Whatever you thought of, Ive already thought of it and that’s why its not in the program.” Great stuff guys

  5. Jim is a humble dude. After this interview he text me and thanked me for having him on the podcast. The guy thanked “me” for having “him” on the show??! One can learn a great deal from Jim about what it is to have passion for something…total passion in the true sense of the word. Not some bullshit gimmick.

  6. Always enjoy anything Wendler related. One of my personal favorites: http://www.t-nation.com/powerful-words/letter-to-young-jim-wendler

Thanks for having him and thanks to Jim for gracing us with his time. Fun.
